There was once a time in my life when I liked it. I even tried to write it. Yes, I enjoy writing, just NOT ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE'S INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FUCKING EACH OTHER. But back then, in my younger and more impressionable years, I thought it was cool.
Then I wrote a fanfic about the movie Once Upon A Time In Mexico, and it all changed.
If you don't write a character EXACTLY the way they want you to, they snark at you. Gawd, I hate snark. I wish I could take all those lame, sarcastic motherfuckers, tie them down, and make them listen to how stupid their bitching is. Then shoot them. But that's another story. The point is, fandoms are like cliques of middle-school girls...EVEN the ones who act all elitist, and are in motherfucking COLLEGE. It takes all the fun out of admiring and loving a character. Especially a Johnny Depp character. Those fanfiction twats are the worst of the bunch.
Fanfiction writers often judge other people on the basis of how well they write their pointless, driveling, self-gratifying buttsex. If you only write well when it's your own characters and universe (which IS real writing, fanfic is not,) then they assume you're boring/stupid/etc.
Oh, and what's the deal with taking a stylish villain and making them SARCASTIC? Even when they're not? Is it easier to diddle oneself when the object of lust is cracking wise? Blech.
